BACKGROUND

On Tuesday, February 25, 2014, Jackson, Mississippi Mayor Chokwe Lumumba passed away unexpectedly. He had served at the city's mayor since July 1, 2013, winning in a landslide election with 87 percent of the vote. Mayor Lumumba was laid to rest on Saturday, March 8, 2014 next to his wife Nubia Lumumba at Autumn Woods Memorial Gardens. Mayor Chokwe Lumumba was a son, brother, cousin, husband, father and grandfather. In all of these roles, he created and modeled a strong commitment to human rights and a dedication to the liberation of Blacks in America. He served as a visionary and a leader for individuals across the country who were seeking to transform their lives and their communities through love, resistance and solidarity.

The Honorable Chokwe Lumumba was the co-founder of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, a member of the National Conference of Black Lawyers, the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in AmericaNational Black United Front, the Provisional Government of the Republic of New Afrika, the Institute of the Black WorldAll-African People's Revolutionary Party, the National Jericho Movement, the Mississippi Workers Center for Human Rightsand the Vice President and founder of the New Afrikan People's Organization.

In addition to this work, our Baba Chokwe, brought the movement into the courtroom as an attorney with the Detroit Public Defenders Office and the Peoples Law Center in Jackson, MS. He represented thousands of people in more than 15 jurisdictions across the country, serving individuals who have seen the worst injustices the criminal justice system has to offer. Some of his work includes but is not limited to freeing the Scott Sisters, two women who were serving a double life sentence for an alleged armed robbery that netted $11.00 in Forest Mississippi and defending Freedom FightersAssata Shakur and Geronimo Pratt. Mayor Chokwe helped to bring the killers of Medgar Evers to justice further solidifying himself as a true legal worker and defender of the people.

Please join us as we celebrate the life and work of Mayor Chokwe Lumumba, consider how we will continue the Lumumba Legacy and ensure his vision of "One City, One Aim, One Destiny" for the people of Jackson, MS.
