THE PIROGUE

The Pirogue/La Pirogue  is a more contemporary story than Sia, the Dream of the Python which took us to pre-colonial Africa trough a legend, The Pirogue is placed in post-colonial Africa, in a moment of celebration of 50 years of independence.

So from the VIIth Century we move to the XXIth Century to find a film that is incredible in its proportions, aspirations and realization. The Pirogue was part of the Official Selection of Cannes 2012. It was released in theaters in the US and Canada. The Pirogue portrays the story of 30 men and woman who embark on a boat to reach Europe.

The film is convincing in the depiction of different moments of Senegalese life and people. The wrestling match/ceremony, the description of the people who want to leave, the motivations behind their choice, and the scenes in the middle of the sea all reflect reality. It is interesting to realize that The Pirogue and Sia, the Dream of the Python both convey a very strong social message at the same time that they offer a strong narrative.

Lenox Lounge Returns To Harlem This Summer

Lenox Lounge Returns To Harlem This Summer

Lenox Lounge Returns To Harlem This Summer Legendary Harlem jazz bar Lenox Lounge has found a new home just two blocks from its original location on Lenox Avenue. The famed venue shuttered in 2012 with owner Alvin Reed vowing to reopen if he could get the funds to do so. He did, thanks in part to new business partner Dean Schomburg, and the duo will reopen the bar in a 1,200 square foot space at 333 Lenox Avenue at some point in late summer. [ more › ]
